Here’s a brownstone painting job where we did something different, we painted the floors. I don’t run across this often, but apartment painting in Brooklyn has many styles. We used a high gloss white epoxy paint to paint this wood floor, and it worked out really well. Two coats are required, and it has quite an odor, as it is oil based. Plan on being away for the weekend after we paint your floor.
I also really liked the warm orange accent color the client used for this wall in the kitchen.
The new owners of this Park Slope Co-op wanted the room divider between the living room and kitchen removed. The kitchen was pretty dark, and why not allow some of that great sunlight from the Living Room to light it up?

My big concern here, well two concerns were: 1. had the wood flooring beneath the shelf-cabinet thing been damaged or removed? 2. what was done to the archway when the shelves were nailed in. Was the top board still there?
We were lucky this time, the floor was in good shape, save for some paint that we removed, and the top board was intact, though it had some nail holes in it. ( we’ll be painting this apartment next week, we will take care of the plaster repair and drywall repair then. )
As were removing the debris, I walked back into the apartment, and could really see the difference taking the shelves out does. Lots of nice light, and a better feeling of space. The owner loves it as now she can have more than 4 people over for dinner in her kitchen.
We will be doing more work in the Park Slope apartment, running cable TV wire, installing a HDTV mount, and removing more shelving below the bay windows. Stay tuned for more pictures.

This is an install I did in CT, where many wells have sediment. This grit gets into the valves of your washing machine, sinks, shower heads, everything. The solution? Install a 5 micron sediment filter. This client also wanted a carbon filter as well. Carbon filters out taste, basically.
I used water filter units that have a neat valve on top that allows you to turn off the water at the unit, change the filter, and then turn the water back on easily. I like the clear plastic units because you can see when its time to replace the sediment filter. You can also tell when the filtler is needs changing when the water pressure in your shower drops significantly. The bare copper wire you see behind the filter units continues the ground connection of the water system. Many homes have a ground from the fusebox connected to the water main, which runs out into the yard, functioning as a ground. Because we used plastic units, the ground connection was broken, so we clamped in 10 gauge copper wire to make it all right.

We just finished green painting a 3 BR duplex for a very pregnant Park Slope family, and we used Benjamin Moore’s Natura line of latex paints.
The Natura line is a no VOC latex paint that has very good coverage for a green paint. Two of the colors we used were one coat colors. We usually roll walls twice, but this paint is great.
The Natura paint costs almost twice as much as a regular latex paint, but you will use less of it, so the paint costs are the same. For the parlor floor living room and kitchen, we used 3 gallons of the green no VOC Natura paint.
Normally we would have to use 5-6 gallons of regular latex to cover the same area.
I was very impressed by this Green Paint, I usually wear a mask when rolling paint, and I did not on this job, and I did not have a headache, nor was there that ‘latex paint’ odor.
Our client was very pleased with the job and the paint, she is about 8 months pregnant, and wanted the apartment painted before the baby arrived.

HandymanEric installs a lot of HDTV s. Many times we will cut into the wall to hide all the wires, like this one below. Be sure to buy extra long cables if you want this done, snaking the wires thru the wall takes up a lot of wire.

Keep in mind when buying Ikea furniture that unless you’re moving into a new condo, your floors are probably warped, so we’ll have to shim the furniture to level it when its assembled. Not hard to do, but wanted to let you all know that.
