A found objects artist moved into a new studio and we were hired to install new Ikea shelving, the omnipresent Expedit bookcase and a few Billy bookcases.

Roof Repair at Park Slope Garden of Union

On November 28, 2008, in uncat, by eric

The Garden of Union has a nice garden tool shed, and the roof had started to detioriate. It had a roll roof and the plywood sheathing underneath the roll roof had started to rot.
I replaced the plywood that was bad and then laid tarpaper over the existing roll roof. After adding metal drip edge, I [...]

I replaced the plywood that was bad and then laid tarpaper over the existing roll roof. After adding metal drip edge, I shingled the roof with white 3 tab shingles. The roof should last 20 years when done this way.

Custom Storm Windows protect Stained Glass Eyebrow Windows

I was hired to fabricate new wooden storm windows to protect the stained glass eyebrow windows on the parlor floor of a brownstone. The building’s facade was being resurfaced, so it was a handy time to be able to climb up on the scaffolding to measure and then install these.

I was hired to fabricate new wooden storm windows to protect the stained glass eyebrow windows on the parlor floor of a brownstone. The building’s facade was being resurfaced, so it was a handy time to be able to climb up on the scaffolding to measure and then install these.

Storm windows need to have weep holes at the lowest point of the window to allow moisture – condendsation to drain. Many people caulk these weep holes shut, and then their windows slowly rot. The warmth of the inner window, making contact with the colder outdoor space, causes water to collect ( condense ) on the outer side of the inner window. If this moisture is not allowed to drain away, it seeps into the wood, causing it to slowly degrade.

How not to hang a ceiling fan

On November 5, 2008, in uncat, by eric

I got an email with this picture of a ceiling fan and a note that described how it was hanging by one screw and wobbling over a child’s bed. What a way to get me to show up quickly. I went over and removed the ceiling fan.

I got an email with this picture of a ceiling fan and a note that described how it was hanging by one screw and wobbling over a child’s bed. What a way to get me to show up quickly. I went over and removed the ceiling fan.

The fan was quite heavy, made completely of metal. What caused it wobble and the mounting screws to unscrew was that the contractor who put in the fan use an electrical box normally used to mount small ceiling lights, NOT a heavy ceiling fan.

This is what was used to hang the fan, and is not nearly strong enough to bear the weight of such a heavy item.

Ceiling fans need to be installed using special mounting hardware, or they can fall out of the ceiling. This project will involve cutting open the ceiling, installing the correct mounting hardware, and then repairing the ceiling, and repainting the whole ceiling to cover the repair.

Rain gutter pipe installation solves foundation water leak.

On October 4, 2008, in Painting & Home Improvement, by eric

Many rain downspouts end right next the the foundation of a building, which makes no sense to me. You want to get that water as far away from the foundation as possible. A client who was getting water in their basement called Handyman Eric, The Park Slope Handyman.

Here we have dug a trench and installed corrugated drain pipe to move the rainwater away from the building. This pipe works well for this project, its flexible and can be buried. The photo below shows the work in progress, we attached more pipe here to move the water about 25′ from the building.

My sister wanted a new mirror installed, so I came over and put the mirror in, and we videotaped the process for a Gardenfork episode. The original mirror had been glued to the wall, and Mirrors that are glued onto the wall can be difficult to remove, as removing them tears up the wall. The new mirror was larger than the mirror I removed, so it covered up the damage parts of the wall.

I installed a new light fixture, centered over the mirror, after I took this picture.

Central AC leak repaired

On September 16, 2008, in uncat, by eric

Many browstones have central air conditioners installed in enclosed spaces within the building. This unit was leaking water onto the desk situated below it. A quick look showed the condesate pump had failed, and I installed a new one.

New Basement Lights

Brownstone basements usually have poor lighting. Using new fluorescent fixtures, I added electrical outlets to the ceiling of the basement, installed new lights, and now the owners can see what they are doing in the basement.
